Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge | Zambia
Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge, Victoria Falls
Royal Chundu is Zambia’s first Relais & Châteaux property, and it lives up to that accolade with ease. Set along a quiet, private stretch of the Zambezi River upstream from Victoria Falls, the lodge combines seclusion, style, and a strong sense of Zambian culture, creating one of the most distinctive luxury retreats in the region.
Located about 40 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls, Royal Chundu is spread across a private 15-kilometre stretch of the Zambezi. The setting feels far removed from the busier sections of the river, with two unique lodges tucked into the riverbanks and islands. Here, the river feels unhurried and timeless, with fishermen paddling dugout canoes, hippos grunting in the channels, and kingfishers flashing across the water. The location ensures total privacy, while still allowing easy day trips to the Falls for guests who want to combine both experiences.
The Lodge
Royal Chundu is made up of two distinct but complementary lodges.
River Lodge is the main property, set on the banks of the Zambezi with ten spacious suites. Each suite is styled with light, airy interiors, private decks, and luxurious bathtubs with river views. The lodge has two swimming pools, expansive decks for al fresco dining, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that reflects its family ownership.
Island Lodge sits on its own private island in the middle of the river and offers just four villas. It is the more exclusive option, with open-plan living spaces, private plunge pools, and panoramic views across the channels. Reached only by boat, Island Lodge is perfect for couples seeking romance or travellers wanting total seclusion.
Both lodges are known for their exceptional dining. Meals are a celebration of Zambian culture and produce, with dishes that showcase local flavours in a refined yet approachable way. Shared meals under the stars or private dining on your deck add to the sense of intimacy.
Safari Experience & Activities
Royal Chundu is not a traditional safari lodge, but it offers a wealth of river-based and cultural activities that create a rich and varied stay. Guests can explore the Zambezi on boat cruises at sunrise or sunset, often drifting past hippos, elephants, and incredible birdlife. Canoeing is another highlight, offering a peaceful way to navigate the channels with the guidance of experienced river guides.
Fishing trips target the Zambezi’s famous tigerfish, while village visits provide a rare chance to engage with local communities and learn about traditional life along the river. For guests who want to combine the experience with big game, day trips to Chobe National Park in Botswana can easily be arranged. And of course, guided excursions to Victoria Falls are available, ensuring the wonder of the Falls pairs seamlessly with the serenity of the river.
Beyond the river and cultural experiences, Royal Chundu also offers some of the most memorable dining and activity settings on the Zambezi. Guests can enjoy a private picnic on a secluded island, complete with a chef-prepared meal and chilled drinks, or a sandbank dinner under a canopy of stars with the sounds of the river all around. Birdwatching is exceptional here, with over 400 species recorded in the area, from African skimmers to Goliath herons. For those seeking relaxation, yoga on the river deck or an in-room massage provides the perfect balance to days spent exploring.
What defines Royal Chundu is its balance of authenticity and refinement. The setting is peaceful and deeply connected to the Zambezi, the lodges are stylish without being over the top, and the staff go out of their way to make every stay feel personal. It is the kind of place where you can spend one day filled with adventure — fishing, canoeing, visiting the Falls — and the next doing nothing but watching the river flow past from your deck. The combination of river, culture, and comfort gives Royal Chundu a character all of its own.
Royal Chundu is more than just a riverside retreat. It is a place where the Zambezi sets the pace, where local culture is celebrated, and where luxury feels meaningful and personal.
